    What is TRAIN?

TRAIN stands for Training Resource And Information Network. It is a searchable, computerized database used to refer low-income individuals to vocational training, educational, job placement, child-care and substance-abuse programs.

    What is listed in TRAIN?

We list vocational training, adult education, job readiness, and vocational counseling programs, in addition to substance abuse treatment, and child/day care programs. TRAIN is also making an effort with the state office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) to include programs which target disabled individuals.

Within those categories, TRAIN lists a wide variety of programs and services, including:

    How is TRAIN used?

TRAIN is searchable, which means that users can enter their needs, and get a list of programs that meet their criteria. Users can search by type of program, location, special needs (language, wheelchair accessibility, childcare), cost, schedule, and the targeted population of a program (including educational level).  A list of programs meeting the search criteria is returned, and users can view and print out detailed information on any program from the list.  TRAIN can be used right here on the Internet, or at any site with compatible computer resources.

What do I have to do to be listed?

Contact us to find out if you may already be listed! If you're not, simply complete the form we'll send to you, and send the form back to us via mail or fax. If you have more than one program, you may photocopy the form for as many programs as you would like included in TRAIN.  Or, if you already know your programs aren't listed in TRAIN, you can send us information about your programs via our on-line submission form.

If my organization is listed, what does it say?

We list the information you give us. The information varies depending on the type of listing.

In Educational and Vocational Programs listings we display:

In Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Program listings we display:

In Child Care Program listings we display:

But my organization already has a web site about our programs. Why should we be listed in TRAIN?

TRAIN provides access to information about your programs to people who do not have access to the Internet. TRAIN is used on a daily basis by subscribers all over the city to find educational and training options for those in need of them. TRAIN's unique searching capabilities allow people who would benefit from your programs find them - by specifically searching for what they need. TRAIN allows counselors to refer clients to organizations they may not have been aware of otherwise. For our users who use the Internet version, we provide a hyperlink to your own web site and/or e-mail address.

    Can I get TRAIN?

Yes! TRAIN is available in a DOS version, which is loaded onto the hard drive of a compatible PC, and an Internet version, which is accessible right here on the World Wide Web. Subscribers receive either disks, technical assistance, and periodic updates, or a user-ID and password to the Internet version.  Contact TRAIN or see our subscription information page for information on subscription costs.

I'm an individual looking for training, and can't afford a subscription to TRAIN.  Is there somewhere I can use it for free?

Yes.  TRAIN is available to the public through the New York Public Library, the Brooklyn Public Library, the Queens Borough Public Library, and the Citizen's Advice Bureau in the Bronx. You can visit the main branches of the Brooklyn and Queens Borough Libraries, and any branch of the New York Public Library that has Internet access to use TRAIN. If you have a library card, you can also use TRAIN through the New York Public Library's website, from any computer with access to the World Wide Web.

My agency already has TRAIN. How can I advertise to our customers that this resource is here for them?
